Getting Away with Murder

When Bryant and Milam could not afford a legal defense force, v local lawyers stepped up to correspond the two suspectspro bono.
The Trial
When the trial opened in September, the national and international press descended on the scene.
Roy, Carolyn and J. W. became celebrities. Some reporters talked almost Roy and Carolyn'due south "handsome looks" and J. W.'s tall stature and big cigars. They even alluded to Carolyn every bit "Roy Bryant's most bonny married woman" and a "crossroads Marilyn Monroe."
During the trial, the families arrived with their sons dressed in their Sun best. Roy and J.W. in starched white shirts while their wives donned cotton dresses. When they were acquitted, the men after sold their story for $4,000 to reporter William Bradford Huie. 2 of their defense attorneys helped facilitate the interview that was published in Wait magazine in January 1956. Afterwards the town's evidence of support at the trial, the men talked freely about how they killed the young teen from Chicago. But before long after the article came out, both men were ostracized.
Ostracism
Blacks stopped frequenting groceries endemic by both the Bryant and Milam families. The stores soon went out of business. Unable to find work, Roy took his family to East Texas and attended welding school. His one-half-brother J. W. followed him soon later on. Years later, both men would render to Mississippi.
A Revealing Interview
John Whitten, one of their defense attorneys, told National Public Radio'due southSoundprintprogram in a 1994 interview that he subsequently regretted defending the case. "I'grand not proud of it," Whitten said. "I wished I had never been associated with it."
Roy Bryant was also interviewed for the aforementionedSoundprint programme. Legally bullheaded and plagued with back trouble, he refused to talk about the case. Even though he was protected past double jeopardy, he yet feared he would have to pay for his crime earlier he died.
"Let that goddamn stuff die," Bryant said. "Look what they done with Beckwith. And at present they want to get me, well, to hell with them. I'g not gon' talk about it. Tin't ever tell what they might do nowadays, they might alter the Constitution."
(White supremacist Byron de la Beckwith was convicted of murder in 1994, 31 years after assassinating black NAACP field secretarial assistant Medgar Evers.)
Embittered, Roy also claimed that his one-half-brother J. W. got all the money from theExpectdeal. "A lot of people fabricated a bunch of money off of this. I ain't never fabricated a damn nickel."
In 1981, Milam died of cancer of the os. In Baronial 1994, shortly after theSoundprintinterview, Roy Bryant died of cancer.
No one ever did time for Emmett Till's murder.
